I remember reading a peer-reviewed journal article
about a study that concluded that if you essentially sprinted for three two minute intervals within like a 12-20 minute time frame, and got your heart-rate above a certain % of max (can't remember what it was), you essentially obtained the same cardiovascular benefits as marathon runners.
