Running can definitely lead to injuries (as your link suggests), but...

...it probably isn't accurate to say to that "running is tough on the joints." I'd wager most of those running related injuries (RRIs) in the study were shin splints, plantar fasciitis, and the like. Not necessarily joint-related. Here's a link to the semi-recent BYU study showing the benefits of running, specifically on knee joints:

All that aside, the thrust of the advice given here is good: take it out easy, run slower than you think you need to, and be consistent over time.
