Still I'm of the mindset that with certain skill positions you take great kids or kids with athletic upside regardless if you think you're set at that position or if you "don't have a scholarship available at that position" because you can almost never have too much talent at positions like QB, etc. I think back to 2010 when coaches felt they were loaded at the QB position at BYU with returning backup Riley Nelson, incoming over-hyped recruit Jake Heaps, and had 3-4 star QB's in the mission field like James Lark and Jason Munns. Brandon Doman sent a future NFL draft pick who was buried on the depth chart to SUU saying that he'd never see the field at BYU.
The kid went on to break records at SUU and was 7th round pick by the Chargers while we wasted a chance at a special season in 2012 with a top 5 defense paired with a disaster at QB who should've been benched except for the fact that coaches likely didn't feel they had anyone else to turn to.
I think when you find kids who want to come to BYU/are good fits, and are uber athletic you make room for them even if it means you rob a little from one position group to compensate.
