Yeah, I read some comments in the local paper at the time

Something to the effect of “Brigham Young did not settle that corner of the world, the Ricks family did…” I get the point.

Personally I think it sounds kind of lame, but if they were going to do away with the sports program, I guess the school needs some bit of name recognition and exposure. In the context of getting rid of competitive athletics, which notwithstanding the OP, I do not support, I can see attaching the BYU name.
