If anything the south was the abusive spouse. From the beginning of the union

south extorted compromise after compromise from the north using the threat of succession. More importantly, the first states the succeeded did so before Lincoln even took office during the winter of 1860-1861. They didn’t even wait to see what Lincoln actually did before they succeeded. If anyone is abusing anyone, it was the south.
