except their games against BYU. My dream season (back then) would be both football programs meeting as undefeated teams at the end of the year, with BYU beating Utah, and then both teams winning their respective bowl games.
I felt like it was good for the state of Utah, and good for the WAC, and good for BYU to have a nationally relevant rival. So I cheered for Utah quite a bit whenever they weren't playing BYU, especially in women's gymnastics, but also in football and basketball.
But that changed with the 34-31 wins in the early 90's. My friends who were Ute fans became totally obnoxious - to the point of being almost intolerable - and I was finished cheering for Utah after that. The only time they weren't yapping their mouths was when Utah lost, so eventually I found myself hoping that Utah would lose all the time.
That has been my main reason for disliking Utah ever since then. Having coaches like Rick Majerus and Urban Meyer didn't help, either.
