Well then get him a Toyota. I’ve not had either of my used Camrys break down
Just get a used car that hasn’t been in accidents and has been certified as a safe and has been checked by a mechanic and found to be sound mechanically. I’ve gone on several road trips with mine and not one breakdown. Other than a battery running out I never had a problem with either car.

Your kid is spoiled. My boy turned 16 a few months ago. We got him a used car and he was really grateful.
