elite Polynesian athlete. It's painfully obvious that our recruiting them has not been overly successful. BYU serves as more of a fall back in the event that something better doesn't come along. We continue to get the early commitments with the obligatory statement of "I'm so grateful" then when a shinier toy comes along we get thrown to the side. Don't get me wrong I understand their position. We are definitely not the shiny toy at this point and I'm not sure we ever will be again.
We need to start with a Boise State model of finding gems (no pun intended) and developing their talent. we need to scour the country for the under exposed athlete regardless of whether they are LDS or not. But we really to quit spending the majority of our time recruiting kids that aren't going to come play here.
Note: I really am amazed at how much disrespect KS gets from the Poly community. They would rather sign with teams like Oregon State, UCLA, and of course Utah rather then help a D1 Poly headcoach build a program. All of the so called cultural loyalty doesn't seem to extend to KS.
