Seriously, yes. In those days a lot of top LDS players went to PAC-10 and other schools.
UW, UCLA, USC and the AZ schools picked up a lot of very good LDS players for much the same reason they do now —
they wanted to go to bigger schools that had better chances of going to bigger bowl games and better chances of becoming national champions.
