I think we will always land some of the top LDS talent. It woul
Be great if we could land them all. The reality is, some who are LDS are just not a good fit for BYU, some just don’t want to go to BYU, some have academic issues etc.

I think maybe the biggest hit is those LDS athletes who would fit at BYU and even like the school but get caught up in the belief that going to say Alabama or USC or Oregon etc is more glamorous or more big time and thus will give them a better shot at the NFL. Coaches tell these kids all kinds of stuff, but imagine how much of a star some of these would be at BYU rather than just another 4 star on the roster.

They may be over looking and or under estimating all the positive benefits of going to BYU as a member of the church. Dating, the culture, having coaches who understand where your coming from and the other players, not being pressured to forgoe your mission etc. and still play great teams, get exposure and go to the NFL.

BYU probably used to pick up more of those players before social media and all the ways a high school kid can be noticed now days. They probably picked up some really great players that just were not noticed by schools out of state. Many schools also would not pursue LDS players in the past if said player was set on a mission. That has changed somewhat.

Then again there are also more great recruits today than there were 20 years ago with the population getting bigger and the increase in programs to develop athletes.

BYUs talent is very good. I would say better than many if not most G5’s and many p5,s. Not at the top but good enough that with the right coaching etc can be a top 25 team which in turn may help sway some of those Top LDS kids that do fit but end up at a more “glamorous” p5 school. I think that’s what BYU really needs. To win at a higher level. They had the talent to do it this year for sure.
