CDC and agencies want people to be scared into compliance (rightfully so) so they peddle out the worse situations
Trump and his team want to be able to claim victory, so if they predict more deaths and end up with fewer they win
Democrats want it to be a disaster so they hype it up
Local governments want to justify their harsh reaction, so they hype the worst case scenarios
The media wants clicks and hype
Furthermore, this isn't the type of thing where you try to pick the 50/50 spot on underreaction vs overreaction. If we underreact, we are in much more trouble than if we overreact.
Imo, everyone visible has reasons to overreact rather than underreact. And that's not necessarily a bad thing either.
