Yup, working backwards from deaths is just a reasonable guess until...
...the antibody tests become widely available in a few weeks and they are able to do surveillance testing of people without symptoms.

The numbers haven’t changed much because of the 23-day lag between infection and death, but in the next week everyone’s hoping for the drop in total deaths.

Then they’re looking for a rise of regional outbreaks, particularly in rural areas where there are already chronic shortages of doctors.

Then the concern is sending people back into public too soon and getting a new round of outbreaks.

Then there’s the fear it comes back in August/September like the flu.

There’s hope, but the key numbers over the next few weeks are deaths rather than estimates of infected people.
