What?! Drinking/drugs or suicide is a false dichotomy. Sure, if someone on CB recommended suicide it would be a worse
take. But I haven’t seen it recommended. And saying turning to alcohol might be fine because it’s better than killing yourself, is not a great comparison.

Use of alcohol by depressed and otherwise-not-depressed people both seems to increase suicide anyway.
When drunk, judgement that might prevent suicide is impaired, inhibition’s/fear of dying are decreased, distress at contemplating or choosing death is decreased, impulsivity is increased, and drunk people are more likely to choose more lethal methods for suicide attempts (like firearms).

Some studies show that more than half of suicide victims were intoxicated at the time of their suicide. Other studies show that alcoholism may increase likelihood of suicide by 90 times. Not 90%; a 90-fold increase!

So yeah. Using alcohol to “treat” depression is a very bad take. Like you said, tantamount to recommending someone shout themselves.
