Players aren't getting better. Equipment and course maintenance is.
You can argue there is more depth of talent now, and I'd agree. But the top now isn't better than the top 50 years ago. They just have better equipment to use, and better course conditions to play on.

285 used to be really long. Now its a PGA Tour bunt. Equipment has made huge strides. Course design needs to adapt.

Up the risk reward for sure. Now it is just reward. Firm up greens as well. Harder to control shots from more rough.
