I believe they tried all these things a decade or so ago and the players lost it

There were “this isn’t golf” statements too.
I agree with you. Make golf hard again. Not just longer, tougher. Shrink greens, use more slope on greens. Make the rough filthy long and add obstacles.

285 used to be really long. Now its a PGA Tour bunt. Equipment has made huge strides. Course design needs to adapt.

Up the risk reward for sure. Now it is just reward. Firm up greens as well. Harder to control shots from more rough.
