When it came to fitness, the Marines looked down on us Navy guys. They made sure to build in a couple hours of PT into their day, every day. We in the medical corps didn’t have that time allotted to us.
I had a ton of respect for the fitness of the Marines. Those guys were animals. I’d run most days around the airfield in the little base I was stationed at in Helmand province. Probably 3-4 miles a day. One day our CO organized a little race. Two of the younger Marine officers just completely creamed all of us in the medical company. Not even close. Of course, they’d run around most days with packs on their back. Absolute animals. And a privilege to serve with.
