It's a catch 22. As the population increases, many people want to see this stuff. I don't blame them, that's what I do
too. So the only hope is good crowd control and education so that people respect the outdoors and then good multi-use groups to pick up the slack through volunteer work when the idiots who won't listen abuse the land. That's about all you can hope for.

Still, Canyonlands has done a great job of keeping the White Rim accessible and still maintaining it's "wild" nature through the permit system and it has a much different feeling than say "Fins and Things" and "Hell's Revenge" which have also done a bit of crowd control via the fee system at Sand Flats. I think American Fork also does an awesome job of multi-use despite having 1,000,000 people within a days drive. Although it sounds like Covid has also hit the Alpine loop hard and turned it into a parking lot for most of the summer.

So I'm not opposed to either method, but I really didn't like the idea of paving Buckhorn and installing a permanent campsite. There are many places for those with larger 5th wheels and RVs to setup camp around Emery County and Skyline Drive, and then they can access the center of the Swell via Horseback, ATV, Jeep, or mountain bike. I don't see why we need to cover every viewing area with a campground.

I own a trailer and basecamp at State Parks many times throughout the summer. I also primitive tent camping. And you'd be fooling yourself to believe that RV/5er/toy hauler campers and primitive campers can coexist in the same camp ground. Generally speaking, the Tent Campers prefer dark skies, quiet nights, and star gazing. The typical Large Toy Hauler camper likes to plant a flag, flood the area with his LED lights/lanterns, and carry on with their friends/family deep into the night. There isn't a problem with either form of entertainment. I'm in both crowds every year. But it'd be nice to have the Wedge "zoned" as a quite place.
