Seniority still has it advantages. Those long haul captains still get paid very well and have pretty good benefits.

My dad became an airline pilot after retiring from the military. I can only assume it’s because he still wanted to fly

Nah. It's a pretty good job. Many times even fun. I don't dread going to work. I've never been terrified while there.
