As with most things, the earlier you start the better off you are. If you go
through college carefully and work through it, most people going to UVU or UofU or BYU can graduate without debt. If you start saving right off the bat with your new career then by the time kids are old enough to care much about where or how you live you are in such a great position you can afford it and still prepare for the future.

I don't have experience with the "preparing to be a doctor route" so I won't comment on that type of education.

For the rest of us we are mostly in trouble because we squandered our youth.

A good example is my daughter who just got married last summer. She and her husband will both graduate this year. They both took a year at UofU and decided they didn't like the people or the price and transferred to UVU. They both have paid off all of their schooling costs and paid cash for cars. They have money saved and are working full time getting promotions fairly frequently.

Even if they started having kids right away, by the time they have a 10-year-old they are going to be set up just fine to spend time and money on family activities and a family home.
