The point of the carpool lane is to give people with multiple passengers the
luxury of riding in a less congested lane.
At some times of the day this also means the lane moves faster than the flow of traffic.
That doesn’t mean it’s a passing lane. It is by definition not the passing lane- if you want to pass me while I’m driving happily in the carpool lane 5-7 mph above the speed limit you’re welcome to do so in the actual passing lane.

People dont refer to it as the “left lane”. They call it the “fast lane” which should be grounds for losing your license
