A few posts have touched on this already
I just don't think there's the demand.

People watch the NBA (or NFL, or MLB, or NHL) because they're the best players in the world.

People watch college because they went there or they are fans of that school for whatever reason. I went to Utah State and grew up in a BYU family so I cheer for those teams. I think players people forget this when they argue so hard for kids to get either paid by schools or to go out on their own. The reason that people watch them is because of the name on the front of that jersey.

There are a select few who would stand out - Zion Williamson, Trevor Lawrence, etc. But that's it. You could take a bunch of solid top 25 teams from college (basketball or football) and put them in their own league. Now you have the exact same talent, but with teams that nobody has ever followed or heard of that aren't related to schools. Do you really think anybody would pay to watch them? For basketball purposes, it would still b a step well below the NBA's G-league. And I know we all follow that league closely.

The point is the whole reason these guys have a platform is because of the University they play for. It's not a perfect system at all, but I have serious doubts about this idea. I like that somebody is trying something different because the corruption is pretty awful. Having said that, I'm very skeptical about the viability of this whole endeavor.
