--rather than the decadence (and purity?) of the pro system-- that's the basic problem with American spectator basketball today.

I think perhaps one too many people who got-rich-easy — are now taking their American education just a bit for granted here.
I would think one of the worst ways to ruin a 16 year-old kid's life would be to give him a couple hundred-thou-a-year in the context of a 24-7 basketball lifestyle & profession — & then two years later tell him he's just not as good as was originally thought.
