I had a similar experience in HS.

I grew up in SE AZ. My freshmen year of high school we lost every game but one. Most games were called early due to the 42 point mercy rule, including a drubbing from Colonia Juarez Academia where the Romney brothers were raised.

My sophomore year we got a new head coach who implemented a double wing style offense. We ended up winning all our games that year except for one with basically the same team. We only lost 2 seniors from the previous year’s team.

It felt a lot better being on the other end of the 42 point mercy rule.

High schools still use wings a lot and are very successful. Dirty Dan’s Colton High used it back in his HS days.
