If BYU had responded the way you suggest folks would have criticized BYU for
wanting to have it both ways. It didn’t matter how BYU responded in this situation they were going to be criticized regardless.
And at the end of the day, no matter what the organizers said what was their stated purpose, it was done to continue to put BYU in a negative light to achieve their objectives to get BYU to change the honor code.
