As I've stated many times, my position is they shouldn't have done this (the students) and BYU had the right to tell them not to, but could have done so while also expressing gratitude for the support they are trying to show their peers. That's it. I'm not sure why you are misunderstanding me. I am not saying BYU doesn't have legal rights here. I'm just saying that we need to message love while telling people that this is not the time or place.
Part of that messaging is not making ridiculous comparisons to how defacing (if that's what it was?) the Y is akin to defacing the temple. It's more like throwing a projection up on the side of the Wilkinson Center building. That'd be a better comparison. By making a comparison to the temple, you threw fuel onto a fire and made their actions seem much worse than they really were.
I think a simple "We love you and appreciate what you are trying to do to support your peers, but this is not an appropriate reason to light up the Y. Go home now please." The end.
