From what I've heard, there's quite a bit of disfunction on the BYU coaching staff, especially as it regards to player interactions. I've heard that Ed Lamb is particularly problematic in this regard (favors his recruits, plays political games, etc.). Everyone I know that is close to the program said that Grimes was a major stabilizing influence, both between coaches and with the players. I think we saw a culture change when Grimes arrived that started with the offense and gradually spread to the whole team.
Grimes is also exceptional at developing and coaching the OL. BYU's best OLs during the last 20 years have been Grimes OLs.
I hope others can step up and fill in for Grimes, but I think we'll miss Grimes for a lot more than his playcalling.
