So he gets credit for this. When Kalani was first hired as HC, Holmoe had already hired Ty Detmer as the OC.
Detmers offenses the first couple of seasons really under performed and that played a big part In some of the early struggles. Another contributing factor was the the dearth of talent in the program that Kalani inherited. There were some great senior players in his first year (2016) but the very next year those guys were gone and we felt the painful effects of some poor recruiting the last few years of Bronco time in office.
KS gets huge credit for making the very difficult decision of letting Detmer go and then revamping his offensive coaching staff into one of the best ever at BYU.
Great assistant coaching hires leads to better talent evaluation and recruiting which leads to better player development which leads to better on the field results.
Kudos to Kalani for making it happen. You can't explain him out of the equation. As soon as he let Detmer go (he took a ton of heat for letting TD go) things started to happen. He pulled the offer to TDs nephew Zadock and went hard and heavy after Zach Wilson and got him to flip and make a visit to BYU. That was all it took for the Wilsons.
