Their stadium's named after Jack Trice, an African American player who died
because of injuries sustained in a game with the University of Minnesota in 1923. During that game, Trice had his collarbone broken on the second play, faced racial slurs and spitting, and was knocked unconscious in the 3rd quarter causing him to be rushed to the U of M hospital as the fans chanted "So sorry, Ames."
I'm a proud Gopher, but stories like this and that with U of Iowa's Ozzie Simmons are so disheartening to hear.
