The whole point of the nft is it allows you to do what was once impossible:
claim ownership on a digital asset that can otherwise be perfectly reproduced.
I could print out the baseball card glue it to a cardboard backing and have the baseball card. It wouldn't have value because it's not real. In that same way you can download the GIF or media file or whatever and have a copy of it, but unless you have the corresponding nft it won't have value because it's not real. It's the nft that makes it "real"
Your statement that it is a worthless thing is absolutely correct. It only has worth if other people believe it has worth. Just the same as that old moldy piece of cardboard with a picture of an old dead baseball player on it. It's only worth 6 million dollars because someone thought it was worth $6 million dollars, and felt it was one of only three, and that it was real and could not be copied.
That claim of ownership may be valuable to you, and may be not, but what nfts do is allow there to be a verifiable authenticity certificate for a digital asset backed by some entity that can't be faked. That was never possible before the blockchain.
