Because analytics say a bunt single is less likely to end up in a run
scored than the potential for an xbh or hr.
That may not be the case for someone that’s really fast, who can follow a single with a stolen base. It’s also not always true with the lead off batter when there are no outs. But in nearly every case, what I said above is true.

The shift does nothing to prevent a guy from jacking it over the fence. All it's preventing is a single.
