Works on bunting instead of regular hitting that’s what the fielding team would want him to do. The shift does more than prevent singles it helps prevent hits into the gaps that would traditional result in extra base hits.
Essentially a shift says hey if you want to bunt it down the line and possibly get a single 2-3 times out of ten go for it. You won’t be hitting extra base hits on us.

The shift does nothing to prevent a guy from jacking it over the fence. All it's preventing is a single.
