RE: Please explain about all these times when Dr's didn't provide appropriate
1. Our son was born and the pediatrician doing his rounds at the hospital said our baby wasn't getting appropriate levels of oxygen. The Dr was the most pompous jerk I have ever encountered. He came in to do his rounds and we had family in the to see the baby. Instead of coming back when they were gone, he decides to do his check at that moment. He takes the baby from one of the family holding him and proceeds to spend 15 minutes doing all these strange checks on our perfectly healthy baby. He knows we don't have a pediatrician because it is listed on our paperwork that we don't. This is our third kid but we were new to the area. Every looked at each other after we left and commented how strange it was that he spent so long with the baby when he was clearly fine.

The next morning when we are a few hours from being discharged the pediatrician explains that the overnight nurses said that our sons oxygen levels were too low. The clamp foot monitor was reading low. Later we came to understand that there were a significant number of births that had happened and the nursery was really crowded and understaffed that night. Our kids was likely kicking the device and Causing it to misread. He was sent to the NICU. The NICU nurse in charge laughed when he heard the explanation of why our son was there. Our baby was 9+ lbs and he said in 15 years as a NICU nurse he had seen this kind of thing once before. He put the monitor in my son's foot and in about an hour he said that it was clear that there was no issue with him. A day later we were released after this Dr returned and gave us the hard sell on him as a pediatrician. When you can't use common sense and figure out that the monitor and the understaffed nursery was the issue, you can't expect us to trust you. A month later we got an outrageous bill for the 24 hours my son was in the NICU.

Bottom line, a little common sense and a better/different monitor could have saved a lot of time heartache and money.

2. My wife had 4.5 years of a constant headache. Severe pain that robbed her of her life for that period of time. We saw 35 Drs during this time to figure out what was wrong and many of them were excellent but couldn't figure out what was wrong. A few were absolute idiots. A neurologist we saw prescribed a medicine that reduced her pain but he failed to describe the side effects. One of which is to cause hypothyroidism. We didn't know what was happening and she thought she was dying. He was out of the country and we went in for some tests because she was losing her hair and couldn't get off the couch because she was so weak. His office denied allowing us to get any tests done. When he got back in the country we got back into his office and he chided my wife for not coming back to him sooner. He embarrassed her to the point of a breakdown in his office. I could have punched that idiot in the face for the way he treated her for trying to stand up for herself. He didn't know what was wrong with her either and we didn't find out it was hypothyroidism until we saw a different doctor and he did the right blood panel. This was 2 months after our last visit with the neurologist. In my opinion, his reckless prescribing of that drug violated the do no harm standard. It should not have even been an option yet in the treatment and the full list of possible side effects should have been explained. We have since learned that he prescribed this drug to women because of it suppress their appetites and they lose weight. Also, his specialty isn't treating headaches, it is in MS. He only dabbles in treating headaches. I have a lot more I have to say about this guy and his care but I think you get the point.

His poor care and lack of understanding about the drug he recommended and then prescribed cost us years because it sent us down the wrong path in trying to figure out what was wrong. Only in hindsight did we realize how reckless it was. It should have not been his first option.

3. A headache doctor saw my wife and after months of care and misdiagnosis told my wife that she would never get rid of the headaches and that she needed to start to learn to manage the pain. When she suggested a common step in the treatment of headaches she had read about online before pain management, he flipped out and told her she isn't thinking clearly. This time instead of breaking down, which she really wanted to do, she held it together and waited until the procedure he was there to perform was complete. There were 2 nurses in the room. One stayed after to help my wife. Once the Dr and other nurse were gone she apologized for the doctors condescending behavior. We had been seeing his PAs, who were excellent, but they both quit. My wife ended up on a CPAP that she didn't need. Later we discovered the owner of the company that sells the CPAP equipment was none other that the physicians wife (I learned this by getting on the secretary of state website and looking at ownership records). This is the only equipment company his office recommends and it is quite clear that it is a conflict of interest.

This doctor was not negligent like the #2, he was all about keeping people coming back and selling them unnecessary equipment and procedures though. When my wife had to explain that she was on a CPAP to other doctors, they would ask who gave her that diagnosis. When she named the doctor they would roll their eyes. They knew what was up. One doctor commented that they had never seen someone as skinny as my wife on a CPAP. He examined her nasal passage and throat and said it was more than likely it was a "misdiagnosis". I suspect he was trying to say the other doctor was full of crap.

4. A PT that billed us $250 for 15 to 20 minutes of talking to my wife. She never even put her hands on her.

I am sorry but not even lawyers get away with this kind of mis-billing.

I have at least 2 more stories of doctors really screwing things up but I think I have given a couple examples.

We finally figured out what was wrong with my wife's head by self diagnosing a pretty rare condition and convincing a doctor to perform surgery. About a month post surgery her pain was gone and hasn't returned. It has been almost 2 years now.

Listen, I now know what the difference between a good doctor and a bad one after going to the vast majority of those appointments (over 70+ in those 4.5 years) with my wife and I know what good and appropriate care is and what is not Don't pretend your profession doesn't have incompetence just like every other profession. The good doctors are worth the money they are paid and I pay them. The bad ones aren't worth the paper their licenses are printed on. Based in your posting history, you seem like a good one and a nice guy. Enjoy you popcorn though.
