I think he was not cut out to be a university president. He came from a business
background where he was the boss giving out orders and not expecting what came back from the faculty. Academia isn't run like a business. That said I had a similar experience with him post his BYU time. I was sitting in the clerk's office in my ward in Orem one Sunday and Elder Bateman sticks his head in - he was supposed to be at another church in Orem but had entered ours by mistake. Just then the Bishop happened to open the door into the clerk's office, saw him and asked if he had a few moments to speak to our youth. Instead of saying that he needed to be somewhere else, he said sure and spent the next 15 minutes taking with the young men and women in a very spiritual and heartfelt way. In that calling, he was great.
