I live in Germany and have lived in Italy. Germany is definitely second to other
European countries when it comes to historic sites. Rome alone has more to see than all of Germany put together. Not to mention that most of Germany is a total rebuild. The most visited castle in Germany is only 153 years old.
Germany has some interesting stuff, but after three years in Italy, I felt like I was barely starting to scratch the surface. After my first year or so in Germany, it was lather, rinse, repeat. Berlin is an awesome city - but it's not Paris, Rome, or London. And I would argue that Vienna can give it a run for its money.
Give me Italy, France, the UK any day when it comes to historical sites.
