Kunsi Redshirt Freshman
35th Fighter Squadron, Itazuke AFB, Japan
We were stationed at Itazuke AFB in Fukaoka, Japan from 1949-1951. I was 10 years old when we came home to the states in 1951. Some of you will recognize the years span and will notice we were there during the Korean War and Itazuke AFB was the closest base to Korea. As mentioned, my Dad was a member of the 35th Fight Squadron. I don't recall which jets they flew....possibly F80's. I have some pictures of that time period. It was after being there just a few months that the Korean War broke out and my Dad flew 129 missions before we came home. I loved our time in Japan even though I was quite young. I loved the Japanese people that I got to interact with. The base commander at that time encouraged all officers to employ local maids from Fukaoka to help their economy. We had 3 maids. Two came regularly and one was a seamstress that only came 2 or 3 times a week. I recall many a night after going to bed that the phone would ring and then I would hear my Dad walking swiftly down the hallway buckling his belt and off he would go on another mission. One of his best friends from his squadron was the first American prisoner of war. My Dad didn't find out what finally happened to him until after reading a book that someone wrote. His friend had sneaked out of the prison camp to find food for another American prisoner who was quite sick. He was caught and shot. To this day (I am now 81) I get strongest feeling of pride whenever a group or squadron of jets fly over regardless of the kind they are.
