It's a bit of a case by case basis. There are people who are rational about it..
on both sides and people who refuse to be rational on both sides. I'm active and follow the principles of the church fairly strictly, but I recognize the role that faith plays in that equation and I can't really fault people who feel differently from me about the gospel, its teachings, and leaders. I really appreciate fellow BYU graduates and fans who retain their fandom and appreciate the positives about BYU irrespective of their connection to its sponsoring institution. Life would be boring if we were all the same.

I think it can be tough for family members who believe in eternal families and understand the consequences of someone losing their faith (from the believer's perspective) to be rational about that. I can only imagine it would be very difficult for someone who sincerely does not believe the same way as their family and friends to deal with that pressure and so it's not really surprising many people become anti/bitter after leaving the church.

I sometimes get a little irritated with inactive/former members who try to convert everyone to their point of view by trashing the truths that I hold dear. Again, I understand why someone's faith will differ from my own and I respect those differences, but want the same respect in return. It's just tough for some to respect other's views, particularly when they grew up believing a church to be the one true church and then later have a change of heart and/or feel duped by said church. Resentment is a normal feeling in that situation and that can easily extend from beliefs to believers. Thank you for choosing not to fall into that.
