College sports are on the decline with the younger generations.
TV execs are consolidating their present positions with the recognition that the viewing landscape is in flux. Sports still draw enough eyeballs compared to other expensive programming, so there is competition to wring out the most dollars for the least bucks expended. (See: horse racing, also still viable although nobody attends the races anymore.)
