The brain adapts to the change induced by the SSRIs reducing their effectiveness
My personal, non-professional opinion is that SSRIs can help but they should be used as one of several tools. Get in to see a therapist. Work on building tools and making lifestyle changes. Exercise and CBT are pretty powerful. If you need more relief in the short term (3 months to 1 year), medication can help. It can help you through a particularly rough time while you get your feet back under you. But there are side effects and the brain adapts to having it and makes the medicine not effective when taken for long periods of time.
