I've never seen one more than a mile out of the way
There are some in city centers that will be out of the way but drive along any major freeway and you will pass one.
That might not be true of everywhere, I'm sure some places they are more sparse.
But me for example, if I head West on my interstate I pass three different superchargers in two hours. All right off the freeway.

Stopping 4 times and waiting 1 hour and 40 min (assuming no lines) sounds ridiculous. Particularly in the desert.
