Cincinnati had to play good teams in order to get high enough to the CFP. Now, the only games that matter are your conference games. Why play good teams where a loss can throw your team off? Why not play tune-up games to get ready for conference play? You don't have to beat a Notre Dame anymore to get in; you just have to beat Houston and whoever else.
What doubt are we eliminating? Here are the two playoff scenarios last year (because we know who the conference champs are):
With no G5 Auto Bid
1. Alabama vs. 12. Pitt
2. Michigan vs. 11. Utah
3. Georgia vs. 10. Michigan State
4. Cincinnati vs. 9. Oklahoma State
5. Notre Dame vs. 8. Ole Miss
6. Ohio State vs. 7. Baylor
G5 Auto Bid
1. Alabama (SEC Champ) vs. 12. Northern Illinois (MAC Champ)
2. Michigan (B10 Champ) vs. 11. Utah State (MWC Champ)
3. Georgia AT LARGE vs. 10. Louisiana (Sun Belt Champ)
4. Cincinnati (AAC Champ) vs. 9. UTSA (C-USA Champ)
5. Notre Dame AT LARGE vs. 8. Pitt (ACC Champ)
6. Baylor (B12 Champ) vs. 7. Utah (Pac 12 Champ)
So we would substitute Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, and Michigan State for Louisiana, Utah State, Northern Illinois, and UTSA. That absolutely sucks.
