Admittedly, he held that title longer than I thought he had. However, it’s worth noting that he was adjoined onto an existing coordinator. That existing coordinator is widely viewed by the BYU faithful and elsewhere as not having been very good while essentially a Bronco puppet.

It’s also worth noting that the Virginia Defense descended into being objectively awful, resulting in the likely dismissal of defensive staff with or without Bronco’s departure.

That said, I like Kelly Poppinga. I would welcome him as a staff member, but my preference is that we do not hand the coordinator reins to someone who has not built and coordinated a defense before from top to bottom and shown results. If KPop pulls that off, he’s a slam dunk candidate at BYU.
