I've seen the word "mismanaged" thrown around a lot, with little to no evidence to back it up. We all have an emotional connection to BYU that clouds our judgement. Sometimes things don't work out for whatever reason. It's okay to be disappointed, but it's silly for some to say BYU is making a mistake. Or equally to say that Conover is making a mistake. At the end of the day it's the coach's job to attract more talent than it can deal with so as to build depth, competition, and deal with the normal attrition. At the same time it's the player's job to work his tail off, compete for playing time, and ultimately decide where his priorities are for his future. There will always be players that move on for more playing time, a different cultural fit for their personality, a different scheme, or *gasp* to try and achieve dreams of playing at the next level. BYU will not always be the end all for every player out there. And that's okay.
