I’m a lender. I’ve never had it happen to one of my clients, but I’ve heard

Horror stories. I have written in my signature that I will never provide wire instructions, and I instruct all my clients to wait until they receive a physical copy of the wire instructions at closing to wire their money. Stories like this terrify me.

Local moves can be done with cashier's checks. But wires can also be used.

Often times yes. Or the money is quickly forwarded on to a foreign account.

Usually only a few minutes in a US account, then immediately wired overseas.
