The ideal of amateurism in sports is very old and dates back to Britain, when it
was considered low-class to expect or receive compensation for participating in athletics. The ideal was for people to play for the “love of the game”, and not because they were being paid to do it. The Olympics started this way and were a bastion of amateurism for a very long time. College sports in the US were similar.
