That’s a two way street. Players get value based on the platform of playing for
A prestigious school with a built in fan base. But when schools don’t have competitive teams, programs crumble and finances decline. If ByU didn’t put out a competitive team with good players for several years their income would drop dramatically. So the players certainly bring significant monetary value.

All Leagues are carried by the stars. Most players wouldn’t have fans follow them to another team or league. But you could say that for most players in most league.

Even Jimmer who was an all time great at ByU probably didn’t bring a lot of BYU fans to buy tickets and drive ratings to his Japanese team. But he was good enough that fans of his Japanese team were more invested into his team when he played well and won for them.

Players get value from the platform of competing for their schools. But schools get a lot of value for their players bringing wins and prestige to their programs
