I agree with you, and I haven't even heard ...
... the BYU side of the story yet (I am discounting the "he left the team to get a job" scenario). Of course he left the team to get a job, but that is beside the point of why he did not get a scholarship in the first place.

It was up to him to make sure he had proper credits, no matter how many academic hawks the football team had looking over them. It it was between giving a scholarship to Cade or another guy this fall (and it was a toss-up), I would give it to the other guy who hadn't been irresponsible yet. Now, if Gary did give an explicit promise to provide a scholarship to Cade, then that complicates it a little. But any scholarship athlete has to show he deserves one talent and effort wise. For all I know (admittedly, very little) Cade didn't deserve one compared to the others.

I feel for your son and I was looking forward to Cade contributing (I have actually asked a number of times about Cade's progress over the past summer). But if Gary thought Cade did not keep up his end of the deal, then I would have to go with Gary and the other coaches conclusion of not extending one this fall.

I am not trying to impunge on Cade's integrity at all, but I have found it is sort of human nature that when a child explains something to a mother or father, they usually give a very rosy picture and leave out some of the thistles. I know because I did it myself and my friends all do it. Kids grow up doing it. I am just guessing that maybe something that the coaches have to say would reveal some particulars a little differently that Cade did to you. If so, then the coaches may have been doing Cade a favor in releasing the subtle story that they did regarding his leaving the team. Maybe they didn't want to release the whole set of facts because it wouldn't look as good for Cade. Maybe, just maybe, Gary and co. are really acting with a lot of integrity and sensitivity here.
