This article, to me, clearly states why they must expand.

What happens when these other conferences making all this new money go after more new money and search for new footprints around the country? BIG 12 schools will be poached.

If the BIG 12 wants to exist long term, they can't NOT expand. Its too bad their leadership can't see the forest through the trees.
