week 1:
Week 1 - Fri, Aug 29, 2014 - BYU (0-0) @ UConn (0-0) - East Hartford, CT - 2:00 p.m. EST - ESPN

A nice slate of college football games to open the 2014 college football season...BYU vs Uconn is moved to Friday so as not to be overshadowed by some of Thursday night’s bigger games (So Caro vs TAMU, etc). BYU will enjoy being one of the only games on Friday night to whet million’s of college football fan’s appetite and the Cougs are hoping that it goes a lot better than the last time they traveled to the east coast to face a team they should have beaten. That loss to UVA last year is ingrained, very much so, into the hearts of each player, coach and fan.

Uconn is a program in disarray that BYU should beat handily but one could argue that should have been the case with UVA last season but the big difference is that BYU has had a full season to integrate their O, Hill and JSwag are juniors now, and the offensive line is one year older and more developed, not to mention some pretty heralded new wideouts. Despite the HUGE loss of Cody Hoffman, the O should be improved...the question seems to be focused on the D and how they’ll cope with losing KVN, Manu, Sorenson, etc. However, BYU is dealing with it's own "disarray" and one could argue they will be without their 3 best playmakers on offense to start the year...JSwag and Blackmon on suspension and Kurtz to injury.

BYU wins the toss and opts for the ball...gutsy move. Hine returns it to the BYU 43. Anae obviously wants to make a statement and Taysom comes out slinging the ball around. Short completion to Hine out of the backfield, Mahina over the middle, incomplete, incomplete, Hill scramble for 14 and then Mathews gets behind the D and Taysom finds him for a 28 yard TD pass. Looked too easy and the only rush was on a called pass. Anae’s sending a message. The two incomplete balls were in 5 WR sets and were good throws by Taysom, just dropped (by Nelson and Mathews).

BYU’s D is surprisingly tight. The secondary is really fantastic and healthy. Johnson and Daniel make the quickest, most athletic CB’s BYU has ever had. Them, combined with Bills and Leavitt at safety are deadly. Their superb coverage is helping the front 7 get more pressure than normal. BYU adds two more TD’s by halftime (Lasike, 4 yard run and Hill, 19 yard scramble) and BYU leads 21-0 at the half.

The second half is more of the same...Uconn scores their first and only TD, but BYU adds another TD run by Hine (52 yards) and another TD pass by Hill to Mahina (5 yards). BYU rolls easily, turning a few heads on ESPN while doing so. Hine's long TD run is a top-10 nominee and Hill’s perfect strike to Mathews and his scramble (which had a sweet stiff arm) make the highlights. BYU 35 - Uconn 10.

Player of the Game - Taysom Hill - 23/31, 289 yards, 2 TD’s, 0 INT’s, 12 rushes, 109 yards, 1 TD
