week 6:
Week 6 - Fri, Oct 3, 2014 - #19 BYU (4-0) vs USU (4-1) - Provo, UT - 10:00 p.m. EST - ESPN2

Keeton’s comeback was derailed in Knoxville when the Aggies’ rally fell short and Tennessee prevailed 27-21. USU has rattled off 4 straight victories though and look to provide a tough test for BYU. National momentum is building around BYU and especially Taysom Hill who is #2 in ESPN’s QBR and gaining serious Heisman talk from several national pundits. This game is being dubbed the annual “altnernate uni” game and they are doing a “white out.”. BYU trots out with Pro Combat, all-white Uniforms. White helmet, jersey, pants, socks, shoes, everything. Fans are decked out in all white as well and it POPS on the HD tv for sure under the lights. The unis are the classic BYU design but the trim is Royal Blue instead of navy and the “oval Y” logo has been replaced by the old school sailor cougar on each side of the helmet. End zones are white back drop with royal “BYU” and oval Y at center field is all-white with Royal trim. Looks legit.

Despite the crisp, clean look of the “all-whites” BYU comes out a little sluggish. Hill throws a high pass to Kurtz, (who still doesn't look quite himself yet) who tips it up and it gets picked off. D holds them for a FG, but after a 3 and out USU drives down and threatens to score again. Keeton is nailed hard by Kaufusi on a scramble and BYU forces another FG, 6-0 after first quarter.

Taysom is visibly irritated on the sideline, lighting into his WR’s and OL. On the ensuing possession, Hill amazingly avoids pressure, steps up in the pocket and nails Leslie for a 42 yard gain. JSwag eventually punches it in from 4 yards out and BYU leads 7-6 at half time. Another potential BYU scoring drive right before half is cut short by two false start penalties and a fumble by Algie Brown.

The second half proves much of the same, a tough, physical, defensive battle. The highlight comes with two turnovers forced by Kaufusi, the first an amazing, leaping pick that he nearly takes to the house. 2 plays later Hill finds Thompson over the middle for a TD. The second has a devastating blow on Keeton that causes him to fumble the ball. It’s picked up by freshman Tyler Cook, who was spelling Fua for a few plays. As talented as Keeton is, he really has struggled against BYU’s defenses, except his freshman season. This time Hill scores on a designed keeper from 8 yards out. Hill finds Leslie later in the 4th (16 yards) to seal the deal and BYU wins 28-6, scoring two TD’s on short fields. Not the prettiest game but we’ll take it.

Player of the Game - Lebronson Kaufusi - 10 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 forced fumble and an interception.
