week 2:
Week 2 - Sat, Sept 6, 2014 - BYU (1-0) @ #20 Texas (1-0) - Austin, TX - _____ p.m. EST - FoxSports1

BYU gets 9 days to prepare for Texas who is coming off a huge blowout of North Texas in Charlie Strong’s debut. Coach Strong says of BYU game, “I wasn’t involved with Texas at all at the time but I definitely remember the result, everyone noticed, that game probably got me my job here today...They’ll probably do it again if I lose to BYU...we have a huge matchup with top-10 UCLA next saturday but I’m not sure this BYU team wouldn’t beat the Bruins...we better be ready.”

As always, Texas managed to sneak into AP top 25 and moved up one spot after creaming North Texas. BYU went from receiving one single vote to RV #30 after their performance last week. A win here could propel them into the top-25, especially given the national stage. Texas is starting Senior QB David Ash, who has really bad memories of BYU’s bruising defense. He never fully recovered from a concussion suffered in the 4th quarter of that game in Provo last year and it cost him nearly his entire Junior season. Bronco and Co. are hoping to rattle him early and often.

BYU forces a quick 3 and out but can’t capitalize on offense. The punters get lots of work in the first half and the Texas D is noticeably pre-occupied with stopping Taysom, who nearly set the FBS QB rushing record against them last year. The first quarter ends 0-0 with Taysom throwing a pick on a drive that BYU was looking pretty good on and then Jordan Johnson forcing a fumble on a blind-side CB blitz that Ash never picked up. BYU recovered on Texas 39 with their best field position. This brings up a unique situation with BYU’s FG unit which has been awful with the departure of Justin Sorenson. Bronco essentially admitted they’d go for it anywhere between 45 and 20. On 4th and 2 from the 28 Anae rolls Taysom out with a run/pass option, the D collapses on him leaving new WR transfer Leslie wide open for the big completion to the 3 yard line. Two plays later JSwag runs it in for the score. 7-0 BYU. Texas ties it up when Trammel gets tied up with Texas WR, falls and is left WIDE open for a big 69 yard TD grab. 7-7 at the half.

Blackmon, who had to sit the first game comes up with a huge TD grab on the opening drive of the 2nd half to give BYU a 14-7 lead. Texas answers with two long drives (one prompted by another Taysom pick) that BYU forces into FG’s...14-13 BYU heading into the 4th. Texas’ D is really giving Taysom trouble but he finally breaks through for a huge 51 TD run on an option play with JSwag...he literally faked the Texas defender out of his shorts on the pitch and scampers, untouched into the end zone. BYU’s young D shows it’s youth with a couple of penalties on the ensuing drive, allowing Texas to score with 1:43 left. Texas goes for two, but instead of running it in, they try to get cute and run a play action pass...miraculously Fua leaps into the air, tips the ball barely with his finger which causes it to fall into Johnson’s hands for an INT. BYU runs the clock out on a few Taysom keepers and wins 21-19. The boos in Austin are audible as Fox ends the broadcast. Major Applewhite, your seat is on fire!

Players of the Game: JSwag - 23 carries, 134 yards, 2 TD’s, Johnson - 3 PBU’s, 5 tackles, 1 INT
